Marula oil: benefits for skin and face

Huile de marula : bienfaits pour la peau et le visage

Marula oil has a rare reputation: rich, yet fluid. Here are its benefits for the skin and face, who it is suitable for, how to apply it, and in which OMOYÉ treatments to find it.

There are ingredients you discover by their name, and others you discover by their texture. Marula oil clearly belongs to the second category. The first time you apply a few drops, you expect the sensation of a rich, slightly thick oil. You get exactly the opposite: something fluid, which disappears in a few seconds and leaves the skin supple, with no residue. This little contradiction explains a good part of its reputation.

A tree that Southern Africa has known forever

The marula, with the botanical name Sclerocarya birrea, grows in the savannas of Southern Africa, from the north of South Africa to Mozambique, passing through Namibia and Botswana. It is also called the "elephant tree" or "miracle tree." It is an imposing, generous tree, whose yellow and slightly tangy fruit is harvested every year at the end of the austral summer. Elephants love it, and so do local communities.

What interests us in cosmetics is found further in the center. Inside the fruit, a very hard pit houses one or more kernels. It is from these kernels, cold-pressed, that marula oil is extracted. The work is long and often carried out by hand by women's cooperatives. Choosing marula, therefore, is not only choosing an active ingredient, it is also choosing a value chain.

What marula really brings to the skin

A remarkable richness in omega 9

Marula oil is composed mainly of oleic acid, an omega 9 also found in olive oil and, in smaller proportions, in argan oil. This fatty acid has a real affinity with human sebum, which explains why the skin welcomes it without resistance. Concretely, it helps to limit water loss through the epidermis and to maintain the suppleness of the hydrolipidic film, that fine protective layer that keeps the skin comfortable.

Antioxidants that stand the test of time

Marula contains a good proportion of tocopherols, the family to which vitamin E belongs, as well as plant sterols, flavonoids, and minerals. These compounds help protect the skin from oxidative stress linked to pollution and sun exposure, and they protect the oil itself from turning rancid. It is for this reason that marula keeps remarkably well.

A texture that requires no compromises

This is undoubtedly its greatest asset in everyday life. Many people with combination or oily skin avoid oils as a matter of principle. Marula dispels this reluctance. Its rapid penetration makes it an active ingredient that can be used in the morning, under makeup, without fearing shine by midday.

The benefits of marula oil for the face

On the face, marula oil is recognized by four effects that are felt from the first applications:

  • It nourishes without a greasy effect. It penetrates quickly, without sticking, and you can apply makeup immediately after.
  • It protects against dryness. On windy, cold, or heater-filled days, the skin feels less tight and stays comfortable for longer.
  • It softens. Hydrated and revitalized, the skin is more supple and softer to the touch.
  • It revives radiance. Combined with other precious oils, it provides a rested complexion and smoother-feeling skin.

These benefits are all the more visible when the application is regular. An oil applied every evening for three weeks says more about your skin than an entire bottle used from time to time.

Who it is best for

Marula is primarily aimed at skin that lacks lipids: dry skin, skin that feels tight after cleansing, skin damaged by the sun, wind, or heating. It is also very suitable for mature skin, which naturally produces less sebum with age, and for tired or stressed skin with drawn features.

Sensitive skin also does well with it, as marula oil has very little scent. As always, testing it on the inside of the wrist or the crook of the elbow remains a good habit before adopting a new active ingredient. If you are unsure what your skin needs, the OMOYÉ skin diagnosis can guide you in two minutes.

Oil, mask, or body care: which marula treatment to choose?

At OMOYÉ, marula is never alone: it is combined with other plants in three treatments with very distinct uses. All are gathered in the Marula collection.

For the face, every day: Huile aux Trésors

The Huile aux Trésors is a dry oil for the face and neck, which brings together seven oils, including baobab, marula, and frankincense. It nourishes without a greasy effect, revives radiance, and lends itself to a true pleasure ritual: warmed in the hands, pressed onto the face. A single drop, on its own or before your cream, like a serum.

To refresh tired features: Masque Précieux au Marula

The Masque Précieux au Marula combines marula with baobab seed and buriti oils, with aloe vera. Applied for ten minutes in a thick layer, it hydrates intensely and awakens tired features. Left on all night in a thin layer, like a cream, it nourishes without the need to rinse: in the morning, the skin is smooth and plumped.

For the body: Soin Souverain Sculptant

The Soin Souverain Sculptant au Moringa brings together moringa, marula, and indigo in a firming treatment for the stomach, arms, neck, and décolleté. It penetrates quickly, without greasiness, and leaves the skin silky.

Three simple ways to integrate marula oil into your routine

In the evening, as the final step. Two to three drops warmed between the palms, then applied with gentle pressing motions on the face and neck. No rubbing; the skin absorbs it on its own. To go further, the techniques of facial self-massage are perfectly suited.

As a supplement to your cream. One drop mixed directly into a dab of cream on evenings when the skin feels tighter. This is the simplest way to adjust the richness of a treatment without changing products.

On suffering areas. Elbows, hands, cuticles. Marula is not reserved for the face, and it is often on these forgotten areas that it proves most useful.

An active ingredient to know, and to pair

What marula oil provides is serious nourishment, good stability, and rare ease of use. It gives the best of itself alongside other vegetable oils: argan oil from Morocco for dry autumn skin, or jojoba oil, which is even closer to sebum. In a consistent routine, with gentle cleansing and regularity maintained over several weeks, it does its job very well.
