Removing your makeup at night: the step we rush that determines everything else

Le démaquillage du soir : l'étape qu'on bâcle et qui décide de tout le reste

There are some nights when you take your makeup off in thirty seconds, standing in front of the sink with whatever is lying around on the shelf. And there are the others, the ones where you take three minutes longer. The difference doesn't show the next morning. It shows after three weeks.

Makeup removal is arguably the most underestimated step in any beauty routine. We consider it a necessary chore, a cleaning job to do before the serious stuff. In reality, it is what determines the effectiveness of everything that follows.

Makeup removal is not a chore, it is the first act of skincare

What skin accumulates in a day

Makeup, sunscreen, sebum, pollution particles, dust, perspiration. In a single day, the surface of the skin becomes coated with a film that has nothing to do with its natural hydrolipidic film. This deposit doesn't disappear on its own on the pillow. It stays, it oxidizes on contact with the air, and it eventually clogs the pores and dulls the complexion.

At night, the skin gets to work

It is during sleep that cell renewal accelerates and the skin repairs itself from the day. But it needs to be able to do so undisturbed. Clean skin absorbs the skincare products applied afterward much better. Clogged skin, on the other hand, can receive the best serum in the world without being able to do much with it.

The three most common mistakes

Micellar water that is never rinsed

Fast and practical, it has conquered every bathroom. The problem is that it contains surfactants designed to trap impurities and then be removed. Leaving them on all night is a bit like letting soap dry on your hands. If you use it, rinse with clear water or follow up with a toner.

The harsh cleansing gel

That feeling of tight skin right after cleansing, often interpreted as proof of a well-cleaned face, is actually a warning signal. The skin barrier has just been weakened, and it will compensate, sometimes by producing more sebum. Properly cleansed skin is supple and comfortable, never rough.

Rubbing the cotton pad too quickly

Especially around the eyes, where the skin is four to five times thinner than on the rest of the face. Rubbing to remove stubborn mascara tires out an already fragile area. The right technique is to place, let dissolve for a few seconds, then glide without pressing.

The evening ritual, Omoyé version

1. The milk, to remove everything gently

The Kalahari Sensual Cleansing Milk is based on the Kalahari desert melon, a plant that grows where water is scarce and whose oil is renowned for its lightness. Damask rose tones, and aloe vera hydrates. It removes face and eye makeup without leaving the skin raw.

The technique: warm a dab of milk between your palms, massage in small circles for about thirty seconds, then remove with a dampened washable cotton pad or a warm cloth. These thirty seconds of massage make a real difference; they activate circulation and relax facial features.

2. The mist, to rebalance

Two spritzes of African Beneficial Mist with banana are enough to remove the last traces and prepare the skin to receive the rest. It is the role that was once given to toner, only much more pleasant. On skin that is still slightly damp, skincare products penetrate better.

3. The treatment, while the skin is receptive

This is the time to apply your night treatment. The Crème Magistrale for deep hydration, or a few drops of Huile aux Trésors if the skin feels tight or lacks radiance. For the eye contour, a dab of Sacred Green Coffee Fluid tapped from the inner corner outwards.

And on nights when you really don't have the energy

They exist, and that's okay. The vital minimum rule: cleansing milk, nothing else. It is better to just remove your makeup well than to skip a complete routine entirely once every three days. Consistency counts more than perfection.

Once a week, we go a little further

After removing makeup, apply a generous layer of Precious Marula Mask and leave it on for the night. It doesn't get rinsed off; it melts in. It is the ideal Sunday night ritual, when the week has left signs of fatigue on the face.

Three minutes, no more

That is all this ritual requires. Three minutes that transform a chore into a real moment for yourself, and that give all your other skincare products the chance to work. As for your skin, it takes about three weeks to notice. Then, it won't let you go back.
